1920 Census

JENKINTOWN, Pennsylvania (GBT) â€” A man believed to have been Hyman Cohen, uncle of Minnie Snyder Anflick, presumed brother of Eva Cohen Snyder, was found living with a wife and three children in the 1920 census. The record was discovered upon a closer reading of Herman Snyder's 1920 Lipshutz Bank passage order, which brought his mother, Eva, and siblings Lillian and Motel to America in 1922. That document identifies Herman Snyder of 911 N. 6th Street as the primary purchaser. The purchase order continues on the subsequent row, however, and also identifies Rose Cohen, of 3126 Montgomery Avenue, as a secondary purchaser.

Eva and Max Snyder are known to have lived at 3126 Montgomery Avenue at the time of each of their marriages in the mid-1920s. Since Eva arrived in America in 1922, it was previously assumed that no family members were living at 3126 Montgomery prior to that year. The discovery of Rose Cohen's contribution to the Lipshutz Bank passage order challenged this assumption.

While most genealogy websites do not index addresses along with names on census records, SteveMorse.org contains an Enumeration District finder that, if given an address, can usually narrow the search to roughly 25 census pages. The census pages are then browseable on free web sites such as FamilySearch.org and Archive.org. In this case, the address 3126 Montgomery Avenue was located in Enumeration District 968, which covered parts of the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia.

The census record contains a wealth of biographical information that may be used to limit future searches. According to the document, Rose Cohen was living at this address with her husband, whose name was recorded as Herman Cohen, but seems likely to have been Hyman, based on other documents. They were aged 54 and 55, respectively, placing their birth years around 1866 and 1865. Also listed at the address are two sons, Morris and Jack, aged 18 and 28, and a daughter, Yetta, aged 21. Their birth years were around 1902, 1892, and 1899, respectively. All family members are identified as having emigrated to America in 1905, two years before Minnie Snyder Anflick, whose passage Hyman paid in 1907. Hyman and Rose are listed as having no occupation, and the children seem to have been supporting the family by then. The document lists Jack's occupation as a real estate broker, and Yetta's occupation as a department store salesgirl. The document appears to indicate that all family members were naturalized as of 1920, but no year is given for this event. All family members spoke the English language, according to the document.

The family members seem to have gone their separate ways by the time of the 1930 census. No Cohens are identified as living at 3126 Montgomery Avenue in that year. ⬮
