Event Notes > Births > Hogentogler > Catherine > Date of birth:

The best evidence I have so far of Catherine (Hogentogler) Kline's dates of birth and death is the inscription on her tombstone. The same information also appears in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) application of Florence Hipple, No. 668267, but is unsourced there. I learned of Catherine's birth date there first. Later, on a trip to Lancaster in late July of 2011, I first saw Catherine's tombstone. I found the stone to be almost unreadable, but with some concentration, I found the dates of birth and death to emerge. I had by this time forgotten about the dates listed in Florence Hipple's DAR application. Without the conscious benefit of this prior information, I was able to discern that the date of birth was about "July ?6, 18?3". While at the tombstone, I opened my laptop to see what information I had on Catherine, and I read in my notes the date listed in the DAR application: "July 16, 1813". Thereafter, I felt confident that the tombstone reflected the information on the DAR application, and may even have been the source of that information.

Catherines date of death, August 4th 1868, is more legible on the stone, but barely so.
