JENKINTOWN, Pennsylvania (GBT) — A surname search through the website of Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots Foundation last week revealed multiple index entries for Anflick vital records that are presumably on file at the Mykolaiv Oblast Archives in the southern part of Ukraine. The Anflicks' association with Mykolaiv had previously been established through a Blitzstein Bank passage order executed by Louis Anflick on the 23rd of September 1900. Louis paid the passage of two young men, presumably Henry and Harry Anflick, and had the tickets sent to Aron Karanczak, whose address mentioned either the city or oblast of Mykolaiv. The newly discovered indices prove Anflick ties to the region that extend beyond the passage order.
Among the indexed vital records are Louis's birth certificate from 1876 and the death certificate of Louis's father, Simon, which was registered in 1879. Also of interest is the marriage record of a Gitel Anflik to an Avram Lesevich in 1890. Gitel is the Hebrew name of Katie Anflick, who was the mother of all known Anflicks who emigrated to America around the turn of the 20th century, including Louis and Henry Anflick.
Other indexed Anflick vital records are as follows:
In addition to Louis, mentioned above, the birth indices show an Ita Anflik, b. 1868; a Golda Anflik, b. 1871; and a Meer Anflik, b. 1873, d. 1874. The patronymic associated with these three births is Yankyelevna, or Yankyelevich, suggesting that their father was Yankel Anflik, whose death was registered in 1903. A Sosi Anflik, b. 1875, was registered with the patronymic Tsalyekevna.
In addition to Simon, Yankel, and Meer, mentioned above, the death indicies show a Sosya Anflik, who died in 1877 at the age of 24, and a Leya Anflyk, who died in 1913 at the age of 83.
In addition to Gitel and Avram Lesevitch, mentioned above, the marriage indices show a Rivka Anflik, who married a David Berson in 1879, another Rivka Anflik who married a Meylakh Meerovich in 1880 and 1884, a Khaya-Sora Anflik, who married a Mordukh Brailovskiy in 1882, a Feyga Anflik, who married a Froim Bisnovatyy in 1886, and an Ita Anflik, possibly the one whose birth was mentioned above, who married an Itsko Fishbukh in 1896.
The indices do not clarify the relationships of these various Anfliks to Louis and Katie Anflick. They do, however, dispel any speculation that the Anflick surname was a shortened upon arrival in America from a longer Russian name. The Cyrillic version was likely Анфлик, which could be Anglicized to either Anflik or Anflick.
A request for access to the indexed documents was sent to the Mykolaiv Oblast Archives via email in English on the 23rd of January. No reply has been received at the time of publication. It should be noted that Ukraine is currently experiencing geopolitical tension with neighboring Russia that may affect the operations of some local services. ⬮
