JENKINTOWN, Pennsylvania (GBT) — The GenealogyByTim.com server received a hard drive update last week. Its original 160GB hard drive was replaced with a larger capacity, 320GB drive. The 2.5 inch, IDE drive was purchased from eBay seller hbr2015 in mid-January.
The linux dd utility was used to copy the server's data to the new drive. Without having specified a block size, the copying took a full five days to complete. Upon rebooting the server with its new hard drive installed, the MariaDB database was found to be corrupted, likely a result of edits having been made automatically to the website's database while copying was ongoing. Recopying the database data from the /var/lib/mysql folder on the original drive to the same folder on the new drive resolved the corruption.
After the server was brought online with its new hard drive installed, the old hard drive was installed into a second Compaq nc6230 laptop, which will be used as a backup server until its 160GB threshold is exceeded.
In the meantime, the backup web server will double as an experimental e-mail server. If the experiment is successful, Tim will be able to send and receive e-mail's directly from the genealogybytim.com domain, without the need for a third-party e-mail provider. ⬮
